Apple iPad - A personal View Notes from a talk and demo by Anne Mitchell to the JCC on Thursday 18 November

What can the iPad do?
All of the built-in apps on iPad were designed from the ground up to take advantage of the large Multi-Touch screen and advanced capabilities of iPad. And they work in any orientation. So you can do things with these apps that you can’t do on any other device.

Home Screen :-No waiting for ‘Booting’ with just one press of the Home button, you have access to every app on your iPad.

Like:-_ the iPad Internet with instant clear quality to browse I.T. web pages. The easiness to rotate the screen to a preference of Landscape or portrait.
Like:-One Click for the Instant automatic check for Wi Fi access, If Free access or a lock if a password is needed.
Like:- Ease of use in Hotels, Airports, hospitals etc wherever there is a Wi Fi you can browse or read a newspaper to pass the time, as well as lots of use OFFLINE.

Like:-Mail app on an iPad. The split-screen view and expansive on-screen keyboard, again ease of use. 1 tap to obtain instant access to either of my E-mail ISPs pages.
Dislike:- *At this moment it is too easy to obtain my E-mails if I lose or it is stolen. *Security, I found within the 1st 2 weeks of use I had a problem with a scam E-mail asking for 982$! Thankfully after 4 hrs it was sorted out by the help desk. In E-Mail i have not seen any buttons to easily File, move, or put mail to Spam.

Like:-A vivid LED-backlit IPS display is better quality than the netbook.
Like:-Ease again to open albums with a tap, and Flip through my pictures one by one when showing to friends and family. Or play a slideshow and share my photos.* You need to buy the photo adaptor to insert SD cards 29€ it may need another multiadaptor for some cards, or you can Sync photos direct from another computer to yours. BUT the computer has to have I Tunes loaded. Try the Dropbox apps.

The 9.7-inch high-resolution screen makes iPad perfect for watching HD films, TV programmes, podcasts, music videos and more.

With the YouTube app designed specifically for iPad, videos are even easier to find. And on the amazing iPad display, they’re more fun to watch. Especially in HD
Reach out and touch your songs. View your album art full-size. iPad makes music look as good as it sounds

Note: This had to be download onto the iPad first before I could access Apps, as well as being able to obtain stuff from the computer. Millions of songs, thousands of films and TV programmes and so much more. Browsing and buying are just a tap away.
App Store
You’ll find more than 250,000 apps on the App Store and iPad can run almost all of them. Including everything from games to productivity apps They have regular bulletins on new apps available.

LIKE:-*Reading is excellent on iPad, (you can buy a carry case which has a bookstand incorporated) It is possible with the earphones to have audio books. Access thousands of books from a free disc computer to i-pad Sync, or via apps in i Tunes, they can be free to the latest book at a reasonable price. Text looks crisp and bright, it is easy to change brightness and font size. You can Zoom in or out as needed. Easy access to book content and place a bookmark.
Turn over the Pages with a flick of the finger, just like normal.
*NOTE: The i pads User handbook is via an apps, loaded at the start, as none is given with this product.

Maps See more of the world with iPad. Find locations easier than ever with street view, satellite view or new terrain view — all using Google services. Save the ones you want, so to access when not on Wi Fi.

Notes: With its large display and on-screen keyboard, iPad makes it easy to jot down quick notes and keep important information on hand. You can even email yourself reminders

Calendar & Local weather:
Again a 1 tap to see your schedules, easy to read and manage. Again can be synched with your computer or iPhone.

With Contacts on iPad, you can see much more than just names and numbers. And you can do more with them too.

Accessibility Universal access is built into iPad. So right out of the box, Apple makes it easy for people with disabilities to enjoy all that iPad has to offer.

iWork The iWork productivity applications — Keynote, Pages and Numbers — have been completely redesigned for iPad.* So you can create great-looking presentations, documents and spreadsheets. You can even share them as Microsoft Office files with any Mac or PC user.
Keynote Create a presentation with custom graphic styles, elegantly designed themes, stunning animations and effects, and powerful new features designed in an apps. I found this app called Quick Office.

Pages apps: Pages has everything you need to put your words into beautiful documents. Including ready to use Apple-designed templates and the usual easy-to-use formatting tools, it’s easy to text wrap, add objects, photos etc, E-mail direct or share. It has an in built thesaurus!

Numbers Numbers includes over 250 easy-to-use functions, an intelligent keyboard, flexible tables and eye-catching charts. So you can create compelling spreadsheets in just a few taps.

HOBBIES & Games:
Lot’s to choose from. My favourite is Star Walk. Virtual Astronomy, also Tree to go ancestry. Just touch i tunes, search a key word and you see all the choices ready to use.

Amazon Kindle:
Register to view the large range of films, videos, books, games etc available to you.

What it can’t do: is take photos,or take normal usb port items, except via the i phones pad to usb computer connection. At present you have to sync and transfer to your computer to print any docs out. But it can be done via the new Wi Fi printer!!

I Pads - Why did I go for an I Pad? When I was going for a netbook?

First of all I did not want another phone, or camera. Nor the newish Galaxy Android tap screen technology. I wanted a personal computer.

1. I have a Computer Born & Bred son who lives and works by computers – for nearly everything!!? He bought an Apple iPad in the U.S.A. before they were available in the UK. He did express that it is not the same as a computer? Meaning within some of it’s available functions.

2. I found that it only took minutes with the iPad to be able to get some use of it! No heavy computer knowledge needed. Great especially for the things most important to me! although it does work a completely different way to anything I was previously used to.

3. My view after an extensive shop around for computer netbooks, revealed that although they compared with carry-ability, Lightweight, and a fit for a handbag! Cost wise they were around the same price for a decent netbook. In Netbooks I found the screen was too ‘small to view’, and the key board was fiddly, as well as getting access Wi Fi was not as easy as the i-pad..

4. Some of the Apps are exceptional and not available for a netbook, such as;-Sky Walk for Astronomy.-It is the way of the Future.
Not keen on the fact the I Pad has no usb port, but it has a computer to USB adaptor. A web cam to the I pad for Skype would be welcome.

New other iPads are now on the Market, using Microsoft & they have USBs and cameras, but each has different characteristics. The choice is yours!!
